How to Support Your Child

Every parent wants their child to do well at school. However, it is sometimes difficult to know what to do to help. We are committed to helping parents/carers understand how to help their child to maximise the chances of achieving their potential.

Most of the points listed below may seem obvious but provide a useful overview of how parents can further support their child.

Attendance - ensure your child attends school every day unless genuinely ill. Every day missed through absence means your son/daughter has 5 lessons of work to catch up. Please help us by booking all medical/dental appointments outside school hours.
Copying Up - if missed work needs to be copied up, ensure your son/daughter completes it as soon as possible. Ask for help from subject teachers if needed.
Come Equipped - ensure your son/daughter is fully equipped for all lessons.
Homework - establish a good homework routine, whereby your child has access to a desk and a quiet place to study. This should be free from distractions. Encourage your child to show you their classwork and homework regularly.
Revision - provide advice on how your child should approach revision. Plan a programme in the weeks leading up to the exams. This should be at least 4 weeks before the exams in May for Years 7 and 8, April for Year 9. Year 10 and Year 11 examination dates are published on our Examinations Page. They need to learn work thoroughly and ask you to test their understanding.
Literacy Skills - spend some time with your child to help develop their reading and writing skills. Encourage them to read as much as possible. There are many tips in our useful guide.
Numeracy Skills - provide real-world opportunities for your child to use his/her numeracy skills e.g. totalling shopping bills, working out timings of when TV programmes will be on etc.
Communication - maintain close contact with your child's Head of Year, Form Tutor and Subject Teachers by using the Personal Planner on a weekly basis. It is also essential that you attend Parents’ Evenings (dates are in the school calendar).
